What Is The 5G Compatible Smartphone Area? Introducing The Frequency Allocation Of Each Company

Introducing 5G frequency allocation of major telecommunications companies

In 2019, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications accepted an application to open a specific base station for the introduction of 5G. Four companies, NTT DoCoMo, KDDI, Softbank, and Rakuten Mobile, applied. Based on the opening plans submitted by each company, a review was conducted to allocate 6 frames in the 3.7GHz / 4.5GHz band (100MHz width each) and 4 frames in the 28GHz band (400MHz width each).

The examination items include the ” base development rate “ instead of the conventional population coverage rate. This is the ratio of base stations placed in about 4500 sections excluding no man’s land, etc., with the whole of Japan divided by a 10km square mesh. The reason why this standard was adopted is that 5G is expected to solve social issues at the national level, including not only urban areas but also rural areas.

From here, we will introduce the services, frequencies, and opening plans of each company.

Table of Contents

NTT DoCoMo

NTT DoCoMo has acquired two frames (3600 to 3700MHz, 4500 to 4600MHz) for the 3.7GHz / 4.5GHz band and one frame (27.4 to 27.8GHz) for the 28GHz band. The amount of capital investment is about 795 billion yen, aiming for a base expansion rate of 97.0% by the end of 2023, and plans to expand to 20,000 stations nationwide by March 2022.

Since the service started, NTT DoCoMo has released 5G compatible smartphones and Wi-fi routers such as the “Galaxy”, “Xperia” and “AQUOS” series, including the 5G compatible iPhone series. The area that supports 5G services is also gradually expanding.

KDDI

KDDI also acquired two frames for the 3.7GHz / 4.5GHz band (3700-3800MHz, 4000-4100MHz) and one frame for the 28GHz band (27.8-28.2GHz). The amount of capital investment is about 466.7 billion yen, aiming for a base expansion rate of 93.2% by the end of 2024, and plans to expand to 50,000 stations nationwide by March 2022.

Since the service started, KDDI has released 5G compatible smartphones such as “Galaxy” “Xperia” “AQUOS” “OPPO” “TORQUE” “Google” series, including 5G compatible iPhone series. The area that supports 5G services is also gradually expanding.

Softbank

Softbank was given a point difference between NTT DoCoMo and KDDI in the examination, and the 3.7GHz / 4.5GHz band was assigned one frame (3900 to 4000MHz). One frame (29.1 to 29.5GHz) is acquired in the 28GHz band. The amount of capital investment is about 206.1 billion yen, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications has announced that it will aim for a base development rate of 64.0% by the end of 2024. The base will be expanded to 50,000 stations by the end of 2021 and 200,000 stations by the end of 2025.

As an individual condition for SoftBank, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications requested thorough measures to prevent recurrence in light of the large-scale communication failure that occurred in December 2018.

Since the service started, Softbank has released 5G compatible smartphones such as “Google”, “LEITZ”, “AQUOS”, “Xperia”, “razr”, “Redmi Note” series, including 5G compatible iPhone series. The area that supports 5G services is also gradually expanding.

Rakuten Mobile

Rakuten Mobile has acquired one frame (3800-3900MHz) for the 3.7GHz / 4.5GHz band and one frame (27.0-27.4GHz) for the 28GHz band. The amount of capital investment is approximately 194.6 billion yen, and we are aiming for a base development rate of 56.1% by the end of 2024.

Rakuten Mobile has just entered the mobile phone business. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications has requested the steady establishment of base stations as an individual condition for future development.

Since the service started, Rakuten Mobile has released 5G compatible smartphones such as the 5G compatible iPhone series, its own original terminals “Rakuten” series, and “OPPO” series. The area that supports 5G services is also gradually expanding.
